Epcot is split into two main areas: first is Future World where you enter the park and find many pavilions and attractions based on the initial ideas for EPCOT... next is World Showcase where you can visit pavilions from nations around the world, enjoy food and drink from these area, see films, shop, and hit up attractions. Here is a quick vid my husband took of Walt himself explaining Epcot when the idea was just Future World (which can be found in Hollywood Studios' One Man's Dream exhibit). Basically imagineers had EPCOT planned as this Future World area and they had this idea for a World Showcase park and they just pushed the two maps together so you have a two-part park which creates an amazing dual experience for all guests!
